Every year brings with it the prospect of the next big new TV show. Whether it’s on cable, network, or the Internet, people are scrambling to get hooked to the next “can’t miss” show.
Over the past several years, cable has had the best luck when it comes to debuting the biggest and best shows on television. Sons of Anarchy, Breaking Bad, Walking Dead, and many of the other most popular shows on TV have all come from cable networks. But network TV has countered with some great shows of their own, including Person of Interest and 2013’s biggest new show, The Blacklist.
Here are some of the most anticipated NEW shows hitting the small screen in 2014.
Most Anticipated NEW Shows of 2014
Helix: Perhaps the most anticipated show in 2014 is a show called Helix, which debuts on the SyFy Channel on January 10th with limited commercial interruptions. It has all the makings of a huge hit. Created by Star Trek’s Ronald D. Moore, creator of the award-winning Battlestar Galactica reboot, Helix revolves around a team of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control, who travel to a high-tech research facility in the Arctic to investigate a possible disease outbreak, only to find themselves pulled into a terrifying life-and-death struggle that holds the key to mankind’s salvation… or total annihilation.

True Detective: Juggernaut HBO premieres its most talked-about new show on January 12th. They managed to land both Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey to lead the rest of this all-star cast. HBO has a great track record, and has been the leader in cable television for years, with The Sopranos, Sex in the City, and Game of Thrones. This show has all the makings of another breakthrough hit for HBO. The series will jump back and forth between the present day and 17 years ago, filling in the blanks of the central story, and each episode will focus on a different character’s point of view. The show is also an anthology, so any future seasons will deal with a new case and a new cast of characters, a la American Horror Story. This is part of the reason HBO could lock in such big stars.

Penny Dreadful: From creator John Logan comes this horror offering from Showtime. Some of literature’s most famously terrifying characters, including Dr. Frankenstein and his creature, Dorian Gray, and iconic figures from the novel Dracula become embroiled in Victorian London. No release date has been slated yet, but look for it in 2014.

Intelligence: It looks like Josh Holloway did indeed make it off the island at the end of Lost. He has been a hot commodity, and while he has appeared in a few movies, CBS locked him down for their highly anticipated new show Intelligence. Holloway plays an elite spy with a nano-computer embedded in his brain. This show looks to be the baby of CBS for 2014, and with their recent track record for launching hit shows, all signs point to this being a huge hit. Look for a sneak peek on January 7th.

It looks like they may have found it, as Black Sails has been getting a ton of buzz over the past few months. The show features Captain Flint and his pirates, twenty years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic Treasure Island. Look for the debut on January 25th.
