As the saying goes, a lot of things are always better late than never. And, although the FBI should have never launched its investigation into the Trump campaign, given the shoddy evidence the Bureau had, at least the Department of Justice’s Inspector General is now pledging to get to the bottom of what happened.
The IG’s pledge, coming in the aftermath of a public rebuke of the FBI by the FISA court, isn’t the worst thing the FBI has to fear. No, in fact, the IG’s actions could even be viewed as an attempt at whitewashing the FBI’s actions.
The real inquiry is going to come from Attorney General Barr, who just recently shot down former FBI Director James Comey’s assertions that he was “seven layers” above the investigation into the Trump campaign. Comey and his former cronies have to be shaking in their boots by now. And they have to hope that Barr runs out of time and isn’t able to complete his investigation before the end of Trump’s first term, and hope that Trump isn’t reelected. Otherwise the long arm of the law will be coming after them.
