Over the past several election cycles, Democratic mega-donor George Soros has injected millions of dollars into political races for local district attorneys. These races, which don’t normally attract much outsider attention, have suddenly become hotly contested, with more and more money entering the arena. And the results for American cities have been unfortunately predictable.
Soros-backed prosecutors have swept local prosecutor elections in numerous cities across the country, from San Francisco to Chicago to Philadelphia. In some areas Soros-backed challengers even took on Democratic incumbents and won. These leftist candidates made no secret beforehand about how soft they would be on crime. And as anyone could have foreseen, crime is rising in these major cities.
Thieves know that they’ll now be treated with kid gloves. They can steal with impunity, knowing full well that they’ll be released immediately so that they can go rob and steal some more. Many rack up dozens of arrests before even facing a trial. And with prosecutors preferring not to throw the book at them, innocent Americans will continue to be terrorized until someone steps in and decides to put his foot down.
A recent case in Arlington, VA illustrates just how bad it has gotten. A habitual criminal who was found guilty of petit larceny in 2020 robbed a CVS three days later and led police on a high speed chase as he headed toward Washington, DC. He wasn’t charged with that robbery, only with eluding police, and served a total of nine days in jail.
Since then the criminal was charged with five counts of larceny, and was recently arrested for assault and battery. After posting bond, he robbed another CVS the next day and was arrested once again by police. And he’s considered a fugitive in Alexandria, VA because he hasn’t returned to court to face larceny charges there. Talk about a massive and intentional screwup on the part of prosecutors, who don’t seem to understand that not every criminal can be rehabilitated.
But at least police in Virginia are still making arrests. In Austin, TX, police will no longer be responding to so-called non-emergency calls, such as attempted theft of property, burglary, theft, prostitution, or suspicious vehicles. You can just imagine that criminals will take full advantage of that, knowing that they can steal with impunity and that as long as they leave before anyone sees them, their odds of being arrested are low.
The trend towards more woke prosecutors shows no signs of abating, so this sort of nonsense could be coming soon to a city near you. We have to hope that the violence seen in cities that have elected these imbeciles is making an impression on voters elsewhere, and making them aware of the necessity to reject Soros-backed leftists who are trying to become elected prosecutors.
